Biography

Michael H. Solomon (1965 – 2021) was an artist and community leader. Born in Philadelphia, Solomon moved to Wilmington as a child. He discovered Creative Vision Factory during a period in which he experienced homelessness and addiction following the death of his wife in 2007. He began his eleven-year long artistic journey there, first drawing with pencil on paper. His practice grew to include painting and mosaic work. Within a year, Solomon became a foreman for CVF’s first large-scale public project, the Kalmar Nyckel mural in Wilmington’s Eastside, where he was tasked with directing CVF members on the mural’s installation. He continued to stay involved in and lead various other projects including a mural at Sarah Pyle Academy and a mosaic at Stubbs Elementary School. Solomon was also the foreman for the Christina Cultural Arts Center mosaic located on Shipley Street between Seventh and Eighth Street. In addition to his work as an artist, Solomon was passionate about supporting his community. In 2008, he helped found a Philadelphia non-profit aiming to tackle homelessness through running called Back on My Feet. Solomon continued to build upon his leadership roles and became a certified Recovery Learning Specialist. In his free time, he enjoyed gardening, running, and playing musical instruments. Michael Solomon's dedication to his community and his passion for art left an incredible impact on those with whom he interacted. He was a bridge who created a safe platform between members and the broader community as well as a gift to all who were fortunate enough to know him. Solomon will be remembered by many for his kind heart and artistic spirit.
